In my last update, I told you that the California State Assembly passed a bill, SB149, that would require future presidential candidates to disclose five years of tax returns if the candidates want to be on the ballot in California. The bill has now passed both houses of the California State Legislature. But, now the bill approaches its biggest hurdle yet: we must get Governor Brown to sign the bill into law. If he does, we will be sending a strong signal that we value transparency and support giving voters an accurate and complete profile of all presidential candidates before they go to the polls. According to advocates in California, we need a grassroots effort to nudge Governor Brown to sign this bill, which is critical to all Americans. His decision on SB149 is expected between now and October 15th. PLEASE TAKE ACTION TODAY and contact Governor Brown, asking him to sign SB149, the Presidential Tax Return Disclosure bill. California and non-California residents alike, are encouraged to reach out to the Governor. As always, a phone call will make the most impact, but any outreach is helpful. Here is a model script for your call to Governor Jerry Brown: I want Governor Brown to know that I strongly support SB149 and urge him to sign it into law immediately. All presidential candidates must be completely transparent in an era where fake news has become an everyday occurrence and our cherished Democratic norms and traditions are under assault. Below, you’ll find the contact information for Governor Brown’s office. Again, if you are able, a phone call is preferred.
