To our respected Vietnamese refugee community,
We are pleased to update that the entire Inner West Council, including all 15 Councillors and the Mayor officially voted to listen to the voices of the Vietnamese refugee community and move forward with creating a new memorial symbol that more appropriately represents our refugee journey and heritage.
As a result, the Council has decided not to proceed with the lotus symbol and the wording “Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the End of the Vietnam War” as part of the Vietnamese memorial project.
During yesterday’s community consultation meeting, three representatives from the Bilingual Refugee Reference Group (BRRG) addressed the Council, As part of the group’s collective representation:
Thao Le took on the role of delivering the community’s strongest and most direct concerns to Council, speaking about the unity shown through the petition campaign, the refugee journey from past to present, and the community’s wishes and expectations moving forward.
July Ly took on the role of connecting the BRRG and Council, speaking about the establishment and purpose of the Bilingual Refugee Reference Group, and expressing appreciation to the Councillors Howard & Barlow who assisted the group in properly preparing and lodging the formal submissions.
Thang Luong took on the role of representing the voices of the younger generation, sharing his personal memories and reflections, and speaking about the hopes of the next generation for the future of the community.
On behalf of the Council, the Mayor expressed sincere regret for the distress caused and stated that the Council’s intention was always to honour the contributions of the Vietnamese community over the past 50 years, never to cause hurt or division within the refugee community.
The final vote was unanimous: 100% support from all Councillors, with no objections.
The BRRG recommendations adopted by Council included:
In addition to removing the previous symbol, the Council will engage in genuine consultation with the Vietnamese refugee community in future projects, including the development of a new memorial to replace the lotus design.
The Council will work toward establishing an appropriate and meaningful annual Vietnamese Refugee Cultural & Heritage Day.
We share this positive outcome with deep gratitude to every member of the community who stood together, signed petitions, spoke up, and supported this effort. Without this unity and collective voice, this meaningful result would not have been possible.
Once again, we sincerely thank all genuine Vietnamese refugees and supporters who took the time to stand up for and protect our community.

Toàn Bộ hội đồng Inner West Council - gồm 15 nghị viên và thị trưởng đã chính thức thông qua quyết định: sẽ lắng nghe ý kiến cộng đồng người Việt tị nạn để làm lại biểu tượng mới phù hợp hơn đại diện cho người tị nạn chúng ta, không chọn biểu tượng hoa sen và hàng chữ kỷ niệm 50 năm chấm dứt chiến tranh Việt Nam để làm tượng đài vinh danh người Việt nữa.
Trong buổi họp tiếp kiến cộng đồng & lắng nghe ý kiến 3 đại diện của Nhóm Bilingual Refugee Reference Group (BRRG) hôm qua, gồm Thảo Lê (Kể về sự đồng lòng của người ký thỉnh nguyện thư, câu chuyện & hành trình người tị nạn từ quá khứ đến hiện tại, trình bày nguyện vọng và đòi hỏi của cộng đồng từ nay) Chị July Ly (Nói về sự thành lập và mục đích của nhóm tham vấn cộng đồng song ngữ Bilingual Refugee Reference Group & cảm ơn sự giúp đỡ của 2 councilors giúp cách thức Làm giấy tờ để nộp lên cho đúng cách ) và Thắng Lương (Nói về kỷ niệm - ký ức cá nhân và mong muốn trong tương lai với vai trò của thế hệ tiếp nối)
Ông thị trưởng đã thay mặt hội đồng nói rằng họ rất xin lỗi về những đáng tiếc đã xảy ra, và mục đích chính của hội đồng là muốn làm tượng đài này là để vinh danh sự đóng góp của người Việt trong 50 năm qua, không có Ý làm tổn thương cộng đồng.
Kết quả biểu quyết : 100%, tất cả những nghị viên đều thông qua kiến nghị cuả Nhóm BRRG, không một phản đối.
Trong kiến nghị gồm: 1/ ngoài bỏ biểu tượng cũ, thì hội đồng từ nay sẽ phải tham vấn cộng đồng để lắng nghe nguyện vọng trung thực của cộng đồng tị nạn trong những kế hoạch tới, gồm cả tượng đài vinh danh mới thay tượng sen đã bỏ,
2/ Sẽ chọn 1 ngày đủ ý nghĩa và phù hợp để tổ chức Ngày Di sản và Văn hóa Tị nạn Việt Nam hằng năm.
Xin chia sẻ tin vui, thay lời trân trọng cảm ơn đến sự ủng hộ và đồng lòng của tất cả quý cô chú anh chị. Không có sự đồng lòng này chắc chắn chúng ta không được kết quả mĩ mãn này.
