WE NEED SOLUTIONS, NOT JUST RESILIENCE!
A Petition for Stronger Community Support, Disaster Preparedness, and Sustainable Solutions
Filipinos are often recognized for their resilience. When typhoons, floods, earthquakes, rising prices, and other challenges affect communities, people find ways to recover, help one another, and continue moving forward. This strength is an important part of how communities respond to difficult situations.
However, resilience should not be the only response to problems that can be prevented, reduced, or better managed. People should not always be expected to simply endure hardships when stronger systems, proper preparation, and effective public services can help protect communities and reduce unnecessary suffering.
In the Philippines, natural disasters are a recurring challenge for many communities. Typhoons, floods, earthquakes, and other hazards can affect homes, schools, livelihoods, infrastructure, and access to basic services. Because of this, communities need not only the ability to recover after disasters but also proper preparation and systems that can help reduce their impact.
Disaster preparedness can include early warning systems, evacuation plans, accessible emergency information, adequate evacuation facilities, and community-based preparedness activities. These measures can help people understand what to do before, during, and after emergencies.
Public services and infrastructure also play an important role in helping communities become more prepared and resilient. Safe roads, reliable facilities, effective drainage systems, accessible healthcare, and other essential services can help communities respond to challenges and recover more effectively.
At the same time, communities facing poverty and economic difficulties need sustainable opportunities that can help them improve their livelihoods. Providing support, skills development, and opportunities for communities can help address some of the conditions that make recovery from difficult situations harder.
This advocacy is not about criticizing Filipinos for being resilient. Instead, it recognizes resilience while calling for stronger solutions that can prevent people from having to endure the same hardships repeatedly. Being resilient should not mean that people are expected to accept problems that can be addressed through better preparation, responsible governance, and community action.
We call on government institutions, community leaders, schools, organizations, and citizens to support stronger disaster preparedness, better public services and infrastructure, sustainable livelihood opportunities, and responsible use of public resources.
We also encourage everyone to participate in preparedness activities, stay informed about emergencies, help their communities, and support programs that address problems at their roots. Small actions, combined with effective systems, can help create safer and more prepared communities.
If you support the call for stronger solutions, better preparation, and safer communities, sign this petition and share it with others who believe that Filipinos deserve not only the strength to recover, but also the support to prevent unnecessary hardship.
LET US CONTINUE TO BE RESILIENT, BUT LET US ALSO BUILD A FUTURE WHERE RESILIENCE IS SUPPORTED BY REAL SOLUTIONS.
