Yes to TTC service, no to fare hikes in 2016

The Issue

Remember that massive Yonge Line subway breakdown this year?  It was one of the many delays, breakdowns, and undignified sardine overcrowding experiences that have become familiar to all of us who ride the TTC.  What's even worse is that riders are being slapped with yet ANOTHER big fare hike starting January 1.

It doesn't have to be this way.  Elected officials can show real leadership and take action now to improve service and lower fares for Toronto's 1.8 million riders now.

That's because the 2016 budget is being debated right now.  Currently, the 2016 TTC budget will slap riders with a total of $23M in fare hikes, but we're only getting $5M in service improvements.  In fact, one of the service-improvement motions the TTC Commission rejected was money to improve the reliability of our subway lines, which keep breaking down!

We are calling on the City to fund the TTC at $1.26 a ride this year, and the Province should match the city’s contribution.  That would bring our funding levels up to about the Canadian subsidy-per-ride average.

We are also calling on the City and Province to fully fund the TTC’s capital budget, so we can get more accessible transit, more reliable service, and more streetcars, buses, and subways.

That's what riders need and deserve.
