Here at The Independent we believe it is the British people's democratic right to be consulted on yet another change of prime minister.
Rishi Sunak will today become the third leader of our country in less than two months, but voters have had no say in the decisions to put him in office. That is why we are demanding a general election.
It is time for voters to decide who should govern the country. In the end, not a single vote - not even by an MP - was cast to put Rishi Sunak in power.
The decision must be handed to the public in a general election. It is a simple and fundamental principle that the government derives its democratic legitimacy from the people. Let them have their say.
