We must lengthen the time period allowed to prosecute domestic violence crimes. Victims are frequently manipulated by their abusers, and it takes significant time to escape that cycle of harm. Even after successfully leaving the abusive relationship, the journey of recovery and healing continues. By the time survivors have processed their trauma and feel ready to face their abuser in court, often the law no longer allows charges to be filed. As a society we must recognize that recovery from domestic violence does not follow a simple timeline. We should support survivors by providing more time for justice to be pursued and seeking to right the wrongs done to them.
