The Issue

Why are we starting this petition?

Dear Attorney General Keith Ellison

We are starting this petition due to the frustration with how this case has turned out. August 7th, 2019, was the day that changed my family's lives forever. My brother was outside Meadow Park Apartments, where he was targeted and shot over eight times at close range. The accused men are Iman Abucar-Hagi Iman and Abdirahman Abdukadir Abdullahi. The prosecutor at Olmsted County, Joesph Rosholt, assured us that he would convict Mr. Iman and Mr. Abdullahi to the fullest extent of the law. Mr. Rosholt stated that he wouldn't offer a plea deal since the crime was done without showing any mercy to the victim.

Iman Abucar-Hagi Iman Previous charges

Previously, Iman was facing charges from a drive-by shooting case that happened in April 2019 where he has two first degree attempted murder charges, and for my brother’s case, he has first degree attempted murder, second degree attempted murder, first-degree great bodily harm, and possession of a firearm violation. Mr. Rosholt combined both the case and most of the charges.

Mr. Rosholt blindsided our family when he offered Mr. Iman a plea deal and a recommended sentence for 150 months. For a guilty plea, Mr. Iman will be charged with drive-by shooting, possession of a firearm violation, and first-degree assault. The damage that Mr. Iman has caused my brother and family is permanent.

Iman Abucar-Hagi Iman showed no mercy for my brother

Mr. Iman shot my brother in close range. Mr.Iman shot my brother twelve times. My brother is now paralyzed from the neck down and he lost an eye due to the life threatening injuries. The psychological harm that comes with this traumatic event he will constantly have to live with this and still not feel at ease knowing the person that attempted to murder him would easily be out within a few years. The prosecutor has my brother's medical records, he knows first hand how much my brother suffered and the permanent injuries that forever changed his quality of life.

Iman Abucar-Hagi Iman is a threat to the public.

How does a man that is considered to be a threat to public safety with his name all over news outlets and newspapers for the community to be aware of get such a plea deal? The evidence against Iman is staggering, multiple witnesses were present that night, and he is on video fleeing after he shot my brother.

There isn't a sentence that could ever make up for the damage done, but twelve years don't even come close. Mr. Iman robbed my brother of his health and his dreams. Olmsted County reduced Iman’s charges and didn't even consider the victim when they made these decisions. Mr. Iman has been terrorizing the Somalia community, yet he gets away with it. Is it because the victim was a Black Somali male? If the victim was a different race would it have been a different outcome? Olmsted County has failed to get justice for my brother. This is a prime example of how black victims get treated in the justice system.

The city of Rochester justice system has failed my brother and the city as a whole. “This particular incident was a very, very violent incident. It involved a shooting at point blank range. Our victim is very, very seriously injured and certainly we believe that the shooting was intended to kill him” said Olmsted County Attorney Mark Ostrem in September 2019. If this is a statement that you truly believed what has changed from September 2019 to October 2020?

My brother does not have a criminal history nor is he a violent person. Anyone who knows him in Rochester can testify. He is a son, a brother, a community member, and a law-abiding citizen that was raised in Rochester for over 20 years. His life changed, and justice is not being served while those who commit the crimes get a slap on the wrist to do damage in the community. The crime rates in Rochester continue to increase due Olmsted county not holding these defendants to be accountable for their crimes. Mr. Iman is a well known violent criminal locally who continues to terrorize the community. He doesn't deserve such a light plea deal. Criminals like him need to be held accountable to the highest extent of the law for their actions.
