This opening arrives just weeks before our nation marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 2026. These two milestones speak to the same truth: Democracy is not a finished product. Democracy is an action word. It is something we do... a living promise that each generation must renew. The Obama Center was built for the people in the neighborhood, for people in every state, but today it stands as a global beacon... drawing the world to its doors, from Germany, Ireland and Africa... from across every continent. It is a reminder that hope has a home, and that community, creativity, and civic courage can move not just a nation, but the world forward. Meanwhile, this commemoration calls on all 350 million Americans (and Global citizens)to reflect on the founding ideals of Democracy and recommit to the unfinished work of a 'more perfect union'.
