We call for the University of Bristol to declare a climate emergency

There is a climate emergency. Bristol City Council has already declared an emergency, as have around 20 other local authorities in the UK (as well as multiple internationally). However, to date no university has declared a climate emergency.

Universities have a key role in leading public debate on pressing scientific, social, and practical issues. The University of Bristol has a wealth of expertise in environmental issues, notably through its Cabot Institute for the Environment, which is a community of 600 experts; several of its academics have participated in the IPCC. The University has made sustainability one of its key priorities.

The University strategy notes that: “Sustainability is embedded in everything we do: the research we support, our curricula, the student experience we offer and the way we behave as an organisation. The environmental principles of Bristol as a city and of our University attract both staff and students, and harnessing their passion and energy to make a positive difference in the world is key to our success and central to our approach.” We ask that the University of Bristol demonstrate its leadership and its commitment to sustainability by becoming the first university to declare a climate emergency.

The university has already pledged to be carbon neutral by 2030. It needs to publicise this pledge and explain to the wider community why this goal is urgent.
