Save Seattle Public Schools Staff!

The Issue

Seattle Public Schools is losing approximately 40 million in funding next year due to a new state cap on local education levies. Garfield High School is losing fifteen teachers next year and as a student body it is obvious that that's going to have an enormous negative impact on GHS because of the loss of new and important perspectives from talented teachers who are getting displaced or fired. While some of these displacements are due to a decrease in Garfield's population, the number of teachers it is losing is not only disproportionate to the school population change but deprives the students of a reasonable student to faculty ratio. Garfield High School does not have the money it needs to function next year, but our state does. And we are only one school out of many dealing with this issue— the entire Seattle Public School district is facing unreasonable budget cuts even with the levy for funding education that was recently passed in Seattle. We request that section 203 of Engrossed House Bill 2242 should be amended to allow for higher local levies. We want the previous funding of $4000 per student, per year, rather than $2500. This is the right decision for the education of the youth of Washington state. Please understand how important this is, and use your power to change it!
