Kim Speedy started this petition to Washington Post and

As a society, I don’t know that we will ever be able to ban assault weapons because of the money and political influence of gun supporters, but we have to do something. We need action, NOW! The only other way we are going to reverse this trend of mass shootings, is to STOP PROVIDING MEDIA COVERAGE OF THE SHOOTER!!! No names, no demographics, no motives, no coverage that makes mention of the shooter. We have to stop sensationalizing these tragedies.

My name is Kim Speedy and I am a Mental Health Provider who has been present at many mass shootings, in the hours and days directly afterwards, providing support to victims, family members and first responders. I am a Senior Subject Matter Expert on trauma, mass shootings and violent crimes. My colleagues and I have performed several psychological autopsies of mass shootings and have overwhelmingly found the following: Shooters, by enlarge, are people who feel like they are on the fringe of society. They feel ignored, inadequate and insignificant. A mass shooting not only allows them to get revenge on society and those who have wronged them but it also ensures that people will know their name and their voice will finally be heard. If we can stop THAT from happening, it will be a giant leap in the right direction.

We need to take action NOW! Before another family loses a Father. Before another Mother has to watch her baby take his last breath and before we lose another first responder to gun violence. The only way to start making progress, is to petition national and local media sources to STOP PROVIDING MEDIA COVERAGE TO MASS SHOOTERS!!! Continuing to do so is creating a psychological term coined Mass Violence Contagion. It’s horrendously negligent for news outlets to continue providing photographs, names, manifestos, and 5 fast facts about mass murderers, with little regard to the impact it has on society and those who are psychologically vulnerable to perpetrate this type of violence. This CALL TO ACTION is the first step in the right direction. Let’s make it happen, for all of our sakes!
