Batman Forever is often lumped in with the disappointing performance of Batman and Robin, but was never shown in its original intent. The rough version ran over 2.5 hours and the studio apparently cut it down before release and resequenced the entire opening third of the film to create the theatrical release edit we know.

Fans at the time and ever since have wondered why the comic adaptation was so different as it followed the shooting script and this has more of the original intent. The novelization goes even further and is perhaps the best representation of the original film. The theatrical release edit confuses many things due to the reshuffling but most critical is the removal of Bruce’s key flashbacks among many character moments that lead to the confrontation in the film that explains not only Bruce’s guilt, his reason for being Batman-but also the meaning of the title Batman Forever.

It has also been said in interviews from various members of cast and crew that there was much additional footage shot and never used including many alternate takes. It was announced that a director’s cut would be prepared with Joel Schumacher back before the special edition dvd release in 2005 but this sadly never came to pass and the result was merely a few of the deleted scenes in rough form presented as standard def extras.

With the success of the Donner Cut of Superman II there is an example of this sort of project being achievable. Unlike that film all of the elements should be available and in good condition. All that would be necessary is the reconstruction of the original edit and then any final polishing needed for picture and sound.

While Forever may never be as beloved as other Batfilms-it deserves to be seen in its intended form in order to be better understood.

Withthe recent confirmation announcement of the original four films being released in 4K with new transfers, there is no time like the present to make the original version of the film available to the public and legions of Batfans everywhere.
