Re-Release Godzilla (2014) on 4K with Brighten Visuals and an HDR Pass

The Issue

A common stereotype with Godzilla (2014), a film released by Warner Brothers and Legendary, is that the film is too dark and visually disappointing. Due to this, a lot of hatred has reached the film over the years with people heavily complaining that this film is impossible to see. Many think this is due to bad vfx needing to be covered up by the dark atmosphere of the night sky. However, in reality, this was all due to terrible transfers of the film being released and re-released multiple times. The film is a visual masterpiece that is amazing to the eye, but due to poor transfers is impossible to experience.

With this, and the sudden boom in 4K re-releases, it is time the film gets a re-release in 4K with the removal of any grey filters and visual noise. On top of that, the visuals should be brightened back up to where they were supposed to be. We have actually seen how bright and clear this film was supposed to look from Legendary themselves from their MPC vfx breakdowns, and it is visually stunning: Godzilla - VFX Breakdown [HD]

On top of this officially released footage from the movie, there are also other edits that show how visually stunning this film could be if released to its full potential!: Godzilla Killing the Mutos (Brightened) and Hawaii Chaos Brightened

How to fix this? Simply, do a new transfer which includes the proper version of the film in 4K. With this version, all the visuals should look as good, if not better than the clips I provided above. Since many of the official clips and trailers for the film use this version of the film and are officially released. This could allow for a new color palette, brighter images, and a new aspect ratio to be included and used.

With the 4K cut as well, they should include HDR, which stands for High Dynamic Range. This will make the movie’s colors more vibrant, and make the blacks richer and the whites sharper. This would be the ultimate visual representation of the film, and allow for the many hard hours of work that many people put into this film to be seen clearly.

With this being one of my all time favorite movies, I would absolutely love this! This version would bring joy to any fans heart to finally experience the film how it should be seen. No need to turn up the TV’s brightness or dim the lights, everything will be visual throughout! And with this version, maybe more bonus features, like behind the scenes and deleted scenes could finally be included like the Akira Takarada cameo, the halo jump speech, or extended action sequences.

Also don’t forget, Pacific Rim (2013), a film that’s a whole year older than 2014 got a 4K release. Why shouldn’t 2014? And Warner Brothers is now releasing the Snyder’s Cut for Justice League, so anything is possible!

From the words of a lifelong G-fan, please make it happen, Warner Brothers!
