Fair treatment for the Kinsley School Cleaners
The Issue
Kinsley Primary Academy is run by Wakefield City Academies Trust (WCAT).
In April 2016 the School awarded its cleaning contract to a private cleaning company - C&D Cleaning Services Ltd. The cleaning staff were transferred from Wakefield Council to C&D, who immediately cut their hourly rate of pay from £7.85 to £7.20, removed occupational sick pay and refused to recognise their trade union, UNISON. Since April the cleaners have seen their pay reduce by more than £600 (a cut of approximately 25%).
The Union has tried to raise the issue with C&D but have been met with insults.
The cleaners (the Kinsley 3) commenced indefinite strike action on 6 September.
We do not believe C&D Cleaning are fit to hold any school cleaning contracts due to the way they treat their employees.
We call upon the WCAT Board to relieve C&D Cleaning of the contract and take the cleaning contract in-house or award it to a reasonable employer.
