Vermonters petitioning to make leghold traps illegal in Vermont.

Vermonters petitioning to make leghold traps illegal in Vermont.
The Issue
Each year, for several months, coyotes, bobcat, beaver, otter, raccoons, fox and other non-target animals (including pets) are caught in barbaric leghold traps in Vermont. Many are beaten and bludgeoned to death if they are unlucky enough to survive the frigid temperatures or are unable to chew off their limbs to escape. Because the Dept of Fish and Game doesn't believe these animals deserve to live in peace and die quickly and humanely, they allow trappers to stomp, beat and torture the animals (on live video oftentimes) with no legal repercussions. Is this what we want our state to represent? People come to Vermont for picturesque beauty and wildlife. Unbeknownst to many is the dirty little secret that lurking on public lands, are steel leghold traps, unannounced or flagged to warn of their presence, (because it is not required in Vermont), ready to trap and maim animals, including deer, raccoon, dogs, and cats. We the citizens of Vermont deserve to have a vote on this matter. We live in a democracy and should be able to choose the fate of all residents, including wildlife.
