The Issue

In the disguise of providing drinking and irrigation water to the drought hit areas, The Government of Karnataka has launched Nethravathi river diversion project which will destroy the bio diversity rich Western Ghats.

According to a report published in the Deccan Herald dated 19 June 2011 (http://www.deccanherald.com/content/170097/diverting-west-flowing-water-not.html)  it has been observed that  it is not technically viable, nor financially feasible to harness the water due to environment constraints and the presence of Western Ghats barrier due to high altitude.

According to The Hindu report dated January 21, 2011 (http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-karnataka/netravati-river-diversion-project-unscientific/article1107320.ece) Netravati River Diversion Project as unscientific and added that it will effect lots of people whose livelihood depends on the river.

As per the Tehelka report (http://www.tehelka.com/2013/10/another-dam-threat-to-the-western-ghats/) A massive network of dams and canals to quench the thirst of central Karnataka could leave the Mangalore region dry and damage the ecology. The report points that The Sakleshpura stretch of the Western Ghats was identified as an ‘Ecologically Sensitive Zone 1’ (a region of the highest sensitivity) by the MoEF-appointed Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel headed by ecologist Madhav Gadgil. According to a study by the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, these forests are home to 119 tree species, 63 shrubs and climbers, 57 herbs and 44 species of butterflies, four dragon and damsel flies, 23 species of amphibians (including the threatened Gundia Indian Frog), 32 reptiles and 91 birds, besides the lion-tailed macaque, Slender Loris, Indian Gaur, elephants and even a handful of tigers.

Now, amid stiff opposition from enviornmentalists and locals, the Government of Karnataka continued the project works. Big big machines have arrived to the western ghats which expected to destroy this ecologically sensitive area.

So, please sign this petition to request the union government to intervene and stop the destruction of the Western Ghats...
