limit the driving timeframe for a Temperary Resident or a visitor
The issue
Dear Vic road and RMS,
In Australia, if you hold a oversea license and are a Temperary Resident visa holder or a visitor, you can use the oversea license to drive limitless.
These are what I can see in official website in NSW and Victoria:
If you're a visitor to NSW, you can drive on your current licence, as long as it hasn't been suspended or disqualified, and you follow the NSW road rules.
You can drive in Victoria without a Victorian driver's licence for the duration of your stay providing you have a valid International Driver Permit or overseas licence.
However, great changes have taken place in the last ten years and more and more people are pourning into Australia. Today there are much more vehicles on the road than 6 years ago when I firstly arrived in Australia. I can notice much more chaos on road than years ago, e.g. some people would stop in a 'keep clear' area, some people would not give away to pedestrians in a striped street, some people started up their vehicle or changed lane sharply without turning indicator light. I would take it for granted that a person who passed the Australian license tests won't do those. The drivers who breached the driving policy are most likely the people who were holding an oversea drive license or even had no license at all.
I want to issue this petition to shorten the driving timeframe for a TR or a visitor if they do not have an Australian driving license, saying reduce the time span to 3 months or asked them to take the Australian drivers' test. In addition, it's better to introduce harsh penalty for people who breach this.
This petition would not only benifit Australian drivers and pedestrians in terms of security, but also increase Australian government's income from drivers' test charges and penalty fees.
