Susan Kim, the Victoria, BC councilor who put her name to a reprehensible open letter that dismissed the horrific rapes and sexual violence of October 7th as "unverified accusations", who liked a tweet applauding the terrorism of October 7th saying "glory to the martyrs", and who has worn a keffiyeh while sitting in chambers (Susan Kim is not of Palestinian or Bedouin descent). Was subject to a code of conduct investigation - advanced by mayor Marianne Alto as a result of her social media use in November 2023.
While the code of conduct investigation found Susan Kim breached the code, it concluded her breach was "inadvertent" and advocated that Susan Kim not be sanctioned for her conduct.
This is a profoundly underwhelming and disappointing outcome.
Susan Kim's conduct merited at a minimum censure from Victoria City Council. Many would (and did) argue that Susan Kim should have resigned as a result of what she did - which included bringing international shame to our city.
Unfortunately, recall legislation does not apply to municipal level politicians in British Columbia. Even the code of conduct complaint process of Victoria, BC is not open to the public.
As such, I'd encourage those who signed this petition to email Councilor Kim (skim@victoria.ca) and the rest of council (Mayor and Council - mayorandcouncil@victoria.ca to register their disgust with the lack of accountability or consequence for what has been reprehensible conduct.
