Dogs should be scanned for microchips by vets if they are newly registered with them.

The Issue

We have just been reunited with my partners stolen puppy. Now hes 9 years old. He was found and taken to our local Pets at Home. He was then scanned and the micro chip on him was with my partners details on. He was contacted and had the biggest shock of his life. His now a 9 year old black lab had been found. We wanted to see him and being registered keeper had rights. We was asked what we wanted to do and of course we thought of his now owners. They will want him back and we needed to find them. They would be missing him. The owner did make contact and as she couldn't collect him she has said that if we wanted him to take him in.. We introduced him to our family and our 8 year old chocolate lab. Hes settled in lovely and gets on well with our family.. It brings me to the question why wasn't he scanned sooner. I asked the vets and they simply dont do it. Im urging all vets nationwide to scan every new animal that comes in to the  veterinary practice that registers an animal with them. Also if the animal hasn't been in a few months to be checked that the details on the microchip are correct and match with the registered details of the owners. The importance of microchipping is clear but this needs to be backed by vets also to make sure that animals that have been stolen or gone missing are with correct owners. To the people who have got missing pets. Please never give up hope. Miracles like this happen after 9 years..Please sign the petition and share show your support. Lets get vets to scan all new animals registering at vetinary practices and all animals after 6 months seen by vets checked for details of owner are correct and matching. Thankyou.
