In case you have not been paying attention...
There is a by-election coming up on April 5th.
Ken Sim and Vote ABC have been devastating for pedestrian and bike safety. One of the first actions they took was to remove the bike lane in Stanley Park. They cynically used upwards of $275,000 from the permanent bike infrastructure budget to pay for the removal.
At the time they promised to replace the bike lane in the park with a new better bike lane by summer 2023, no action was taken.
They have also voted to remove the bike lanes on Beach Avenue to restore 2-way car traffic and add a lane of parking.
Ken Sim and Vote ABC have consistently voted against bike and pedestrian safety voting against speed radar and Red light Cameras both of which are know to reduce pedestrian and cyclist fatalities.
This By-election we have the opportunity to elect two new bike friendly candidates:
Lucy Maloney, is running with One City, she is a strong advocate for bike safety. Lucy founded Love the Lane to advocate for bike infrastructure. And has been a spokesperson for Vision Zero Vancouver.
Annette Reilly is running with the Vancouver Greens to join Councilor Pete Fry. The Greens have introduced several Safe Streets motions calling for improvements to our bike network and lower speed limits.
Turn out for by-elections in Vancouver is pathetically low...last by-election it was just over 10 percent... this means people who actually voted had an extremely oversized influence... you could be one of those people.
On April 5th Vote Bike, Vote Lucy and Annette!
