VICTORY IN VANCOUVER Tonight the Vancouver Park Board commissioners voted 6 to 1 to ban cetacean captivity at the Vancouver Aquarium, and then they amended the park bylaw to end captivity immediately. The three cetaceans currently at the Aquarium will remain but not be allowed to perform --- and no more cetaceans, even if rescued, will be allowed to enter the Aquarium. The Park Board offices were packed with our supporters + John Nightingale. The Aquarium had 300 people protesting outside chanting non-stop throughout the meeting. Sitting in the board room, we could see through the office's floor to ceiling windows the Aquarium staff and volunteers holding signs. They were so loud it was hard for us inside to even hear the commissioners debate the issue! But after receiving 26,500 e-mails, with 14,000 opposed to cetacean captivity and 11,000 directly from the Aquarium and therefore invalid, the Park Board did the right thing and we are celebrating big time tonight! However, the Aquarium has vowed to continue battling the bylaw and has threatened to sue the Park Board. This is exactly what happened 21 years ago, but we are hopeful that times have changed enough for this (and future) Park Board commissioners to hold steady - and we pray the Aquarium will not be able to overturn this bylaw, again. A whale of a thank you to everyone who once again, helped make history happen in Vancouver! Stay tuned! Lots more to come.
