BREAKING BAD NEWS The Vancouver Aquarium just announced that it will continue to import performing belugas into Stanley Park. This is why it was so important to pass that last cetacean motion at the Vancouver Park Board, because it asked the Aquarium to consider a moratorium on whale imports until a whale referendum could take place. But unfortunately, the NPA motion was deferred by Visions Vancouver and Green Party commissioners. The Aquarium no doubt was happy to see the Park Board delay the decision because the Aquarium was given the chance to make this announcement before the Park Board did anything. It is unfortunate that a majority of Park Board commissioners voted to delay any action against the Vancouver Aquarium because that's exactly what the Aquarium needed. The fact that the Visions Vancouver commissioner (who spearheaded deferring the motion for a month) stated at that January 23rd Park Board meeting that the Aquarium might do the right thing and surprise us all with an announcement that they would end whale imports, just shows how totally naïve that commissioner is in regards to Aquarium matters. Such a great opportunity lost. Such a shame. Onwards.
