Re: Quick action urged in cetacean debate, Jan. 25
A huge thank-you to Glen Schaefer for his very accurate reporting/clarification of what happened at the “raucous” (a bit of an understatement, methinks) Jan. 25 Vancouver Park Board meeting in regards to cetaceans in captivity at the Vancouver Aquarium.
For the short term, we need: a moratorium on the transfer of whales, dolphins and porpoises to/from the Vancouver Aquarium, including the five belugas the Vancouver Aquarium has on loan to other aquariums for breeding; a moratorium (difficult as this one may be to enforce) on breeding of Vancouver Aquarium belugas; and an immediate cease and desist order regarding construction in connection with the tank expansion program at the Aquarium.
It’s time to face the fact that keeping cetaceans in captivity is animal abuse.
