Finally a beluga whale-captivity documentary!
It took several orca-whale films (Free Willy, Fall from Freedom, In Bjossa's Wake, Blackfish, etc.) to close all orca whale exhibits in Canada, with only the very last one left in Marineland, Ontario.
Now there is a new doc focused on the plight of the 18 beluga whales captured for the Georgia Aquarium, SeaWorld and other US dolphinariums six years ago. Thankfully, the US government bowed to public pressure and stopped the importation of these belugas, but the poor animals are still being held in Russia in terrible conditions waiting for other buyers.
This doc explores the possibility of placing the belugas on rehab for a supervised re-introduction back into the wild, but also brings up concerns of having to purchase the belugas from the captors as it will only encourage them to go out and capture more whales. What to do?
Ban the international commercial trade in captive cetaceans. It's the only way.
