UVic’s plan to decouple domestic and international student fees, increase international student tuition by 3-5% annually, and arbitrarily add further lump sum increases is wrong-headed and a short-sighted way to fund our university.

International students already pay over three times as much as domestic students pay for their tuition. International students also face barriers such as racism in the housing and job markets, poor currency exchanges, lack of access to financial aid and bursaries, high bureaucratic fees for essential services such as extending study permits, and the inability to work more than 20 hours per week to help pay for their education.

Canadian policy on international student tuition used to be tied to international development, immigration, and cultural diversity - not using their tuition as a revenue source for our underfunded post-secondary institutions. UVic is being profit-driven and opportunistic by increasing international student tuition at a time in which students from abroad are choosing to attend university in Canada over the United States because of President Trump’s problematic immigration ban.

UVic’s unfair tuition hikes mean that some lower and middle income international students will no longer be able to attend UVic. We have to call on the University of Victoria to immediately stop its unfair and opportunistic plan to increase international student tuition.
