Housing is in crisis in our city and our province and our country
More than 10,000 people in NB are on the list for public housing
So many more are one rent increase away from homelessness
There is extremely low vacancy rates and now is the time for SJ to lead the way in building public housing!
Peter Corbyn of the New Brunswick Non Profit Housing association did a presentation last night.
We lost 8,600 units between 2016-2021
Of the stock that's left it averages 52 years old
And 21% of New Brunswick households spend more than 30%, the gold standard, of household income on housing.
We can't keep turning a blind eye
More and more we are in a Gilded Age of housing owners and the poverty is absolutely brutal.
People are literally choosing housing over food and other necessities of life.
I read an article this weekend that was heralding the "splurge culture" on fancy food of Millenials where the author unironically wrote that more and more the luxury young people are choosing us a nice steak or a fancy pop.
It's because we have nothing bigger we can hope for.
And an RCMP report says the housing crisis is creating a policing crisis that law enforcement will not be able to quell.
So
What does government want?
A rebellion
Or to house it's constituents?
I guess we will see
But we need to get to 500 here to take our message to Council
Let's do it together!
Thank you, you're amazing
Andrew
