The Naming of Mount William & Mary
The Naming of Mount William & Mary
The Issue
Dear USBGN Domestic Names Committee:
It has come to my attention that a request to reconsider a 1998 proposal to name a geographic feature in Lake County, Colorado, in honor of the College of William & Mary is now being reviewed by your committee. As a Colorado resident, I would like to add my name to the growing list of those who support naming it Mount William & Mary.
The College of William & Mary has strong historical ties to the state of Colorado and Lake County in particular. Two notable William & Mary alumni, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe, negotiated and executed the Louisiana Purchase, which includes most of Colorado, including all of Lake County. This significant event ensured the westward expansion of the fledgling United States. Thus, William & Mary will be strongly associated with the history of Colorado for all time coming.
While many out-of-state institutions may feel they should also be so honored, none would have as strong a historical relationship with Colorado as William & Mary does. In fact, many of the prestigious universities with mountains named after them have little or no historical connection to the state. Therefore, I respectfully request that you add my name, as a resident of the state, to the list of those strongly in favor of having a Mount William & Mary in Lake County, Colorado.
