The Netflix documentary series entitled Dirty Money (episode: Dirty Gold) exposed some US precious metal companies for buying their raw material from conflict regions, drug lords and cartels, without doing proper due diligence, KYC or AML. 

What's more alarming is that the documentary exposed the US Mint themselves, part of the US Treasury, for buying dirty gold as well. In fact, FBI agents that were working on money laundering issues found out that 80% of the providers APPROVED by the US Mint are dirty. Drug cartels all over Latin America are basically trading their drug money (earned mostly in the US) for raw gold, then happily reselling that gold to the US Mint (through some sketchy companies) who then melts it, and makes those beautiful American Gold Eagles and American Gold Buffalo coins that you love buying. 

Why wouldn't the US Mint, a government organization, implement strong KYC, AML, and proper due diligence procedures to ensure they are only buying from trusted countries and miners?
