As our 101 members, including 22 children and vulnerable individuals, continue to be unlawfully detained for almost 90 days now, the urgency to address their need for protection is pressing more than ever.
That is why, the United Nations Human Rights Council will discuss again the case of the 101 members of our faith currently detained in Turkey, during the upcoming 54th session of the council, set to take place from the 11th of September to the 13th of October 2023 in Geneva.
The case will be discussed in the presence of 47 member-state delegates and a written statement will be handed out to them as well. The written statement, jointly submitted with HRWF and CAP Freedom of Conscience addresses the human rights abuses and severe religious persecution endured by our 101 members at the hands of Turkish authorities for almost 90 days until now, particularly the ill-treatment of vulnerable members. It also addresses efforts to secure humanitarian/asylum visas by various EU and Western countries as the only solution to release the group from detention, grant them protection, and safeguard their right to freedom of religion. Moreover, influential figures and decision-makers are seeing the need to address the 101 members’ urgent need for protection. Recently, UK Member of the House of Lords, Lord Alton of Liverpool, former member of the House of Lords of the United Kingdom and former bishop of the Church of England, The Rt Revd Paul Bayes, as well as international human rights activist and writer Dr. Aaron Rhodes and the Europe-Forum for Religious Freedom Europe (FOREF) have called upon the Consulate General of France in Istanbul to issue asylum/humanitarian visas to 15 Algerian members of our faith currently detained in Turkey at risk of deportation.
Lord Alton of Liverpool was a Member of the House of Commons for 18 years and today is an Independent Crossbench Life Peer. For more than four decades, Alton has been a leading international voice on issues including the environment, human rights, and religious liberty. He has used his long career in Parliament to shine a spotlight on international threats to religious freedom as well as human rights abuses and genocidal atrocities against vulnerable populations. In May 2023 Lord Alton received the 2023 Notre Dame Prize for Religious Liberty. Notre Dame Law School Dean, G. Marcus Cole, said about him: “Lord Alton has had a long, distinguished career of fighting for religious freedom and against religious oppression all around the world — fearlessly. He has dedicated his life to fighting oppression and made this noble cause the cornerstone for his work as a politician and public intellectual.”
The Rt Revd Paul Bayes served as Bishop of Liverpool, from 2014–2022, and as Bishop of Hertford in the Church of England Diocese of St Albans, from 2010–2014.
Dr. Aaron Rhodes is the President of the Forum for Religious Freedom-Europe (FOREF) and the former executive director of the International Helsinki Federation for 14 years. He has been active in numerous civil society campaigns in the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Council of Europe, the European Union, and the United Nations, and has conducted human rights investigations in many Middle Eastern and Asian countries as well as throughout the former Soviet Union. In 2020, Rhodes was honored by the Moscow Helsinki Group "For Historical Contributions to the Protection of Human Rights and the Human Rights Movement." His articles have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, Die Zeit, The American Interest, National Review Online, and elsewhere. FOREF monitors religious freedom and other human rights issues worldwide, working with civil society, governments, and international institutions.
