Dear Petition signers ~

No doubt you've received many messages in recent days from groups that have been working hard to make the world a better place. This particular year-end message serves to bear witness to Fukushima Daiichi.  I'll mention a few general updates now, and will share another post soon.

Unprecedented, massive recalls began in August and have continued into December. A variety of shrimp were feared and found to contain radioactive Cesium-137. Products were either blocked from entering the country at 68 Becquerels per kilogram (which is far lower than FDA's derived intervention level of 1,200 Bq/kg) or pulled from stores in 35 states.  The most recent recalls were in Washington state, as reported by Newsweek on December 20th. The suspected source of the radiation in shrimp (and cloves) is a metal recycling facility in Indonesia as reported by the Associated Press and Consumer Reports. A connection to Fukushima Daiichi can't be ruled out. Krill and other marine-life caught by illegal pirate fishers off the northeastern coast of Japan (in proximity to the Fukushima Prefecture) can be used for feed at Indonesian shrimp farms.

Meanwhile, since August of 2023 Tokyo Electric & Power Company (TEPCO) has dumped 17 rounds, or 133,000 tons of radioactive wastewater into the Pacific Ocean (tritium and carbon -14 are not being filtered at all). Fukushima Fallout Awareness Network (FFAN) and our coalition partners Beyond Nuclear, Citizens for Health, and Ecological Options Network (EON) will not look away, especially with the Trump administration's five executive orders to, among other things, deregulate and expand the nuclear industry. What could possibly go wrong?

The FFAN Coalition continues to educate the public, media, and government about this growing food and public health issue. Please continue to share the petitions and check to be sure you haven't already signed the petition at MoveOn, which also contains a link to the FDA Citizen Petition for comment. If you've signed, please be sure to share it. To date, FFAN's petitions have generated tens of thousands of signatures and 1600 comments from concerned people like you, along with scientists who have offered their valuable feedback and suggestions. Each and every signature and comment matters Phone calls are also powerful. Call FDA at 1-888-Safefood and share your concerns.

There is still much work to do and, with your support, FFAN is ready to take on the New Year. No more Fukushima's!  #WindWaterSolar.

May your New Year be in good health.

Take care,

Kim
