Low-Income Families in the UK
1. Households Below Average Income (HBAI): The latest HBAI report for the financial year ending 2023 shows that around one in six people in the UK were in relative low income (relative poverty) before housing costs. This rises to just over one in five people once housing costs are accounted for.
2. Child Poverty: Approximately 4.3 million children in the UK are living in poverty, which is about 31% of all children. This figure has been rising over the past few years.
3. Pensioner Poverty: Around 2.1 million pensioners are living in poverty, which is about 18% of all pensioners. This has been a growing concern as the cost of living continues to rise.
4. Working-Age Adults: About 8.4 million working-age adults are living in poverty, representing around 21% of the working-age population.
5. Food Insecurity: A significant number of low-income families are experiencing food insecurity. The use of food banks has increased dramatically, with over 2.5 million emergency food parcels distributed by the Trussell Trust in the past year.
