People in Iran are being killed while the internet is shut down and the world looks away.

Despite one of the largest protest waves in years and mounting evidence of a brutal crackdown, many major Western media outlets remain largely silent or provide only minimal, episodic coverage. Whether intentional or not, this silence inadvertently reinforces the information outage deliberately imposed by the Iranian regime.

Because of the shutdown, official casualty figures are widely understood to be severe undercounts. Based on unofficial reports from medical workers, activists, and diaspora networks, the true civilian death toll may already be far higher — potentially reaching into the tens of thousands nationwide so far. These figures cannot be independently verified precisely because communications are being deliberately cut.

Why This Matters

  • Internet shutdowns allow killings to happen without witnesses
  • Under-reporting weakens international pressure
  • Casualty numbers are minimized while violence escalates
  • Hospitals, doctors, and families are left unprotected
  • Silence enables post-protest mass punishment, including executions

Uncertainty caused by censorship is not a reason for silence — it is the reason silence is dangerous.

What We Demand

  • Sustained international media coverage despite internet shutdowns
  • Clear reporting that blackouts are deliberate acts of repression
  • Immediate attention to hospital raids and medical neutrality violations
  • Public acknowledgment that casualty figures are incomplete due to censorship
  • Refusal to normalize silence while people are being killed unseen

When the regime silences Iran and the world stays quiet to the killing, it falls on us to be their voice.

Speak when they cannot.
