I wanted to provide an update on our efforts to strengthen the Town of Wasaga Beach's Tree By-law. As many of you know, the current bylaw does not apply to properties under one hectare and allows for clear cutting  in new development situations.
Over the past three years, I  and other concerned residents, have been in regular contact with Town staff and members of Council regarding the need to review and modernize this bylaw. The review was initially postponed while the Town completed its new Official Plan. More recently, we have been advised that a bylaw review is not expected until 2027, as staff are currently focused on updating zoning regulations to align with the Official Plan.
With municipal elections taking place this fall, this presents an important opportunity for residents to help shape the conversation about environmental stewardship and the future of our community.
As stated in my petition, trees and forests provide benefits that extend far beyond individual properties. They improve air quality, reduce flooding and erosion, provide wildlife habitat, help moderate temperatures, and contribute to the natural beauty that makes Wasaga Beach such a special place to live and visit. A healthy tree canopy benefits entire neighbourhoods and enhances property values and quality of life for everyone.
Many municipalities across Ontario have adopted strong tree protection bylaws that balance responsible development with the preservation of trees and forest cover. Wasaga Beach has an opportunity to do the same by ensuring that existing trees and forests are protected wherever possible while continuing to support thoughtful growth.
If you believe stronger tree protection should be a priority for our community, please consider attending Town Halls and  Council meetings, sharing your views with the Mayor and Council, and discussing this issue with municipal election candidates. Your voice can help ensure that tree preservation remains part of the conversation as decisions are made about the future of Wasaga Beach.
Please also share this petition with friends, family, neighbours and your social media groups.   My next goal is to collect 5000 signatures  on the petition as a strong message to the Town that protecting our urban forest and natural heritage matters to our community and those who support tourism, today and for generations to come.
Together, we can encourage positive action that supports both a thriving community and a healthy environment.

Thank you for your support!
