Urge Utah Legislature to Fund Scholarships for High Schoolers
The Issue
Our focus is on first-generation children, whose parents have not attended college or never graduated from college with a four-year degree. Since only 37% of Americans have graduated with a four-year college degree, that leaves us with over 60% of adults having no four-year college degree. Today, over 70% of all jobs demand a college degree, and long-term technological advancements, such as Artificial Intelligence, are moving at lightning speed. It is imperative that we give First Generation students the support and resources to pursue higher education.
In Utah, the transition from high school to college can be particularly challenging for many students, especially those from first-generation families. Lack of guidance, financial limitations, and limited access to resources are some of the barriers these students face. To bridge this gap, we propose the introduction of a curriculum called the High School to College Scholarship Guide in Utah high schools. This curriculum will guide students through their potential college options, scholarship opportunities, and different career paths available to them.
Having this curriculum funded by the Utah Legislature will empower students to take control of their educational journeys. It will offer structured guidance on applying to colleges, understanding financial aid, and exploring scholarship opportunities tailored to their individual needs and aspirations.
With only about 37% of Americans holding a four-year degree, it's crucial to provide better pathways for those who might otherwise have limited opportunities. Enabling first-generation students by removing educational barriers will not only enhance their future prospects but will also contribute positively to Utah's economy by producing a more educated workforce.
By supporting the implementation of the High School to College Scholarship Guide, the Utah Legislature can make a significant difference in the lives of many students, helping them break the cycle of educational disparity. This initiative will serve as a foundation for their future success, ensuring they are prepared for the demands of an evolving job market.
Sign this petition to urge the Utah Legislature to fund this vital curriculum and give Utah students the chance they deserve to achieve academic and professional success.
