Reports indicate that IRGC forces have dramatically escalated their violence, creating an extreme humanitarian crisis. The United Nations Security Council has convened emergency discussions. Civilians continue to report extreme brutality, including forced confinement in burning premises, with gunfire and other barriers preventing escape. The level of state violence is catastrophic, and the humanitarian intervention stage is long overdue.

We urge the New Zealand Government to:

• Advocate for decisive international measures, including humanitarian intervention.
• Expel officials linked to state-sponsored violence. Following Australia’s expulsion of Iran’s ambassador and other diplomats, and its official designation of the IRGC as a state sponsor of terrorism, New Zealand should take similar steps to uphold human rights and protect civilians.
