we are following up on your email about the boucherville kangaroo.

on Tuesday evening, teams of experts from the ministry were on the ground to carry out a successful capture intervention. the animal was then moved to a recognized institution where it is now regaining its strength. the kangaroo is doing well and will eventually be transferred to another facility in Ontario.

 

a capture intervention requires a structured approach which includes in particular the analysis of the movements and the behavior of the animal, the preparation of equipment and anaesthetic products, under the supervision of a veterinary doctor specialized in this type of intervention, as well as the coordination of duly authorized experts. the absence of immediate intervention does not constitute an inaction, but rather the implementation of a thoughtful, planned and supervised approach in order to aim at the welfare of the animal, the safety of the public and the ministry's stakeholders. moreover, rigorous planning is a decisive element to significantly increase the probability of success. in addition, before any intervention, it is essential to have a safe place of custody adapted to his needs.

 

in Quebec, the capture of animals is strictly supervised. in most cases, it requires obtaining a permit in order to proceed with the capture. these authorizations are intended in particular to ensure that :

 

• the interventionists have the required qualifications ;

• the capture methods used comply with safety standards ;

* the transport and the care of the animal are carried out in an appropriate way.

 

Thus, these requirements make it possible to prevent improvised interventions likely to compromise the well-being and safety of the animal, including during capture.

Mardi soir, des équipes d’experts du ministère étaient sur le terrain pour réaliser une intervention de capture réussie. L’animal a ensuite été déplacé vers un établissement reconnu où il reprend maintenant ses forces. Le kangourou se porte bien et sera éventuellement transféré vers un autre établissement en Ontario.

 

 

 

Une intervention de capture demande une démarche structurée qui comprend notamment l’analyse des déplacements et du comportement de l’animal, la préparation d’équipements et des produits anesthésiants, sous supervision d’un médecin vétérinaire spécialisé dans ce type d’intervention, de même que la coordination des experts dûment autorisés. L’absence d’intervention immédiate ne constitue pas une inaction, mais bien la mise en œuvre d’une approche réfléchie, planifiée et encadrée afin de viser le bien-être de l’animal, la sécurité du public et des intervenants du ministère. De plus, avant toute intervention, il est essentiel de disposer d’un lieu de garde sécuritaire et adapté à ses besoins.

 

 

 

Au Québec, la capture d’animaux est strictement encadrée. Elle requiert dans la plupart des cas l’obtention d’un permis afin de procéder à la capture. Ces autorisations visent notamment à garantir que :

 

 

 

• les personnes intervenantes possèdent les qualifications requises ;

 

• les méthodes de capture employées respectent les normes de sécurité ;

 

• le transport et la prise en charge de l’animal sont effectués de manière appropriée.

 

 

 

Ainsi, ces exigences permettent de prévenir les interventions improvisées susceptibles de compromettre le bien-être et la sécurité de l’animal, incluant durant la capture.
