Hello all, I had a really good email conversation with Honourable Heather Stefanson, the Manitoban Justice Minister and Attorney General. We spoke about the current Manitoba Human Rights Code. I shared with her why the current code is lacking and research to support an upgrade to the code to include physical size and weight. I also shared with her a new research study that showed that in a sample of larger-bodied people, simply knowing there were protections to prevent discrimination based on weight DECREASED their internalized weight stigma and IMPROVED their psychological well-being. This means that the weight stigma that they felt towards themselves was lowered and their mental health was improved simply by knowing that there are protections for larger-bodied people against discrimination.
