The Issue

I moved to Ireland five years ago, filled with hope and dreams of building a life for myself and my family in this beautiful country. Throughout this period, I have integrated into Irish society, contributing to the community and the economy, all while embracing the rich culture and traditions that Ireland has to offer. With the current five-year residency requirement for citizenship, I have been hopeful that I can soon take the final step and officially become part of this nation.

However, recent discussions about increasing the residency requirement for citizenship from 5 to 8 years have caused immense worry, not just for me, but for countless others in similar situations. This sudden change could drastically alter the future plans of many residents like myself who have invested both emotionally and financially in Ireland. We have taken the time to learn the language, uphold the laws, pay taxes, and contribute socially, and it feels unjust to move the goalposts when we are about to reach them.

According to the Department of Justice, non-Irish nationals accounted for nearly 12.7% of the Irish population in the 2016 census, underscoring the diversity and multicultural fabric that enriches this nation. These individuals, often vital to sectors including healthcare, technology, and education, play a critical role in sustaining Ireland’s growth and innovation. Extending the pathway to citizenship by three additional years will not only impact these individuals' lives but also make it challenging for Ireland to attract and retain global talent.

Ireland has built its reputation on being a welcoming and inclusive country, where hard work and commitment are rewarded. Maintaining the current five-year requirement for citizenship reflects these values and assures immigrants that their contributions are recognized and appreciated in a timely fashion.

We urge the Irish government to reconsider any proposed changes to the current residency requirement for citizenship. Let's work together to preserve Ireland's standing as a nation of opportunity and inclusivity, allowing those who have dedicated themselves to its prosperity a fair and attainable path to citizenship.

Please join me in signing this petition to call on the Irish government to maintain the current five-year residency requirement for citizenship. Your support can make a difference in the lives of many who, like me, are waiting to officially call Ireland their home.
