Urge the Eastern Cape Geographical Names Committee to keep the name Lady Grey
The Issue
Our beloved town Lady Grey in the Eastern Cape, steeped in history and cultural significance, stands on the brink of an identity crisis. Born out of the vision of a church wanting to build a sanctuary on the farm "Waaihoek", Lady Grey has been synonymous with a community spirit nurtured over decades. The properties surrounding this historic church were sold to residents who have since formed a community proud of its heritage and the name that encapsulates it.
Within the heart of the Eastern Cape, where no indigenous tribes occupied the land at the time, this town was named "Lady Grey" in honor of the visionaries' contributions and choices. For years, not a whisper of discontent was heard over our town's name; it became our identity, our pride, and our beacon.
Lady Grey isn't just a name; it represents our rich history and a vibrant community effort. Over the years, significant resources and energy were devoted to branding our town, culminating in a flourishing tourism sector. Branding efforts are evident in institutions like the Lady Grey Arts Academy, Lady Grey Royal MacNab, Lady Grey Dam, and a multitude of events like the Lady Grey Agricultural Show, and Lady Grey Extreme Enduro. These efforts have collectively painted Lady Grey on the international tourism map, providing the vital economic lifeline that our businesses, small and large, depend upon.
Changing the name now poses not only a threat to our cultural heritage but also an imminent economic peril. Our fragile economy, still reeling from past turmoils, could be pushed to ruin with potential drops in tourism-related income — the backbone for many livelihoods here. Businesses may shutter, hospitality ventures might falter, property values could nose-dive, and we risk losing everything we've meticulously built over the years.
We, the residents, implore the Eastern Cape Geographical Names Committee to re-evaluate the decision to change the name of our town. This isn't just about heritage; this is about preserving the identity and economic stability of our cherished home. Stand with us, as we protect Lady Grey's name, honor our legacy, and strive for a prosperous future for all who call this town home.
Please sign this petition to keep our name, and in doing so, safeguard our history, our present, and our future.
