Punch is a remarkable young macaque living in Ichikawa Zoo. He’s an orphan, but his spirit and bravery have allowed him to overcome the odds and make many friends in his habitat. Despite his resilience, Punch is living under distressing circumstances as he repeatedly suffers attacks from adult female macaques. This situation not only poses a risk to his well-being but severely affects his quality of life.

Macaques, being social animals, thrive in environments where they can safely engage with their peers. Yet, for Punch, the social harmony is disrupted by aggressive encounters. These assaults could lead to physical injuries, psychological stress, and potentially endanger his life. As passionate animal lovers and advocates for ethical treatment in zoos, it is imperative we step up and ensure that measures are put into place to secure Punch's safety.

There are reports from other zoos, such as the Dudley Zoological Gardens in the UK, demonstrating success in resolving similar issues by implementing stricter surveillance and introducing additional enrichment activities to diffuse tensions within macaque troops. Ichikawa Zoo could benefit from consulting with primate behavior specialists to devise and enact more effective management plans tailored to Punch’s specific situation.

We call on Ichikawa Zoo to take immediate actions including separating Punch during feeding times to reduce conflict, enhancing enclosure enrichment to distract and occupy the macaques, and increasing staff presence to monitor interactions closely. Integration strategies should be careful and science-based, ensuring the physical separation and mental stimulation required to keep Punch safe and healthy.

Punch’s life story of bravery and friendliness deserves the continuation of an ever-improving quality of life. By signing this petition, you stand with us in demanding Ichikawa Zoo prioritize the welfare of Punch and establish a safe and nurturing environment for this courageous young macaque. Your voice is vital in making positive changes for Punch’s future. Please sign this petition to show your support for Punch's protection and well-being.
