Good news came in an email from East Riding Council this evening. Goole public library is to remain in the building by the Markethall.

This is very good news, as there has been a lot of opposition to moving the library out of the heart of town. Personally, I would have preferred it if ERYC customer services had moved out, but the most important thing is the library will stay in the heart of town, with the museum.

it has taken a while, but all credit to all involved for listening to residents’ wishes on the library.

Below is the text of the email received in full, so you can see for yourself what it says.

Best wishes to all,

Richard Coult

Goole Library and Customer Service Centre are to remain in their Carlisle Street location.

This follows plans that were originally put forward to move both services into the brand-new Goole Hub, alongside East Riding Leisure Goole.

The decision was made for them to remain in their current location due to the building remaining in council possession.

The Goole Museum is also housed in the same building and has no plans to relocate. With the wider work of the Goole Town Deal the current location of the library and museum works well with the redevelopment of the adjacent Market Hall.

An application has also been made to the Libraries Improvement Fund to refurbish and upgrade the library. If the application is successful work would start at the end of the bicentenary year.

Time scales for the building works for the East Riding Leisure Goole redevelopmenthave not been affected by the change to the plans. Completion is still scheduled for late summer 2026.

The additional space within the East Riding Leisure Goole redevelopment will now house extended gym facilities.

With the original plans housing the library and customer service centre over two floors, the upper floor will contain a versatile training space designed to enhance the exercise class programme, while also providing customers with a functional area to explore different styles of exercise and the ground floor includes a dedicated hireable room for birthday parties and private hire, an extended café area offering more choice and comfort for visitors, a sports hall viewing area for events all of which support the overall provision of the site the new leisure offers of Tag Attack, soft play and bowling areas.

Councillor Nick Coultish, cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism, said: “Goole Library and Customer Service Centre have become hubs of the community within Goole over the last few years.

“The East Riding Leisure Goole redevelopment is a brilliant initiative that will benefit all our residents and will provide them with many new activities and facilities. The Library and Customer Service Centre will be able to continue the work they have been doing to foster new relationships with the people of Goole, in a space that is familiar to these audiences.”
