Happy National Banana Day!

🍌 NATIONAL BANANA DAY – LET’S CELEBRATE OUR LOCAL GROWERS! 🍌
This Wednesday, October 7, is National Banana Day — a day to celebrate the humble banana, a fruit that is about as Australian as it gets.
And here in Coffs Harbour, bananas are more than just a favourite fruit.
They’re part of who we are.
In a region famous for its beaches, beautiful hinterland and incredible climate, we even built a Big Banana — putting Coffs Harbour firmly on the map! 🍌
That’s why local banana growers are struggling to understand the decision by local Coles stores to stop purchasing bananas, pumpkins and cucumbers directly from growers in our region, as part of changes to their supply chain.
The result? Bananas grown in North Queensland could travel more than 2,000 kilometres to reach supermarket shelves here in the heartland of the Big Banana.
For many locals, that just doesn’t make sense.
There has been disappointment, frustration and plenty of anger from people who want the choice to buy fresh, locally grown produce and support the farmers who live and work in our community.
But this Wednesday, our local farmers will celebrate their bananas with pride! 🍌❤️ And the good news is — you can still buy local.
The community can come along to Woolworths in Toormina Gardens at 10am to meet Benny Banana, or to The Happy Frog in Park Ave from 11.30am to meet a local banana farmer, sample their beautiful fruit and stock up on some delicious local narnies!
Most importantly, thank you to everyone who has signed our petition, shared our story and stood behind our local farmers.
Every signature helps show that Coffs Harbour cares about where our food comes from and the farmers who grow it.
Buy local. Support local. Back the farmers who feed our community
