The Issue

Meyetta King, a survivor of sex trafficking, was wrongfully incarcerated as part of a controversial pimping case. For nearly six years, she has been held unjustly, her life overshadowed by a crime she did not commit. Despite being a victim, she has been treated as a criminal and used as a pawn in a larger narrative that disregards her suffering and survival.

Historically, we've seen cases like that of Cyntoia Brown, who, after serving 15 years of a life sentence, was granted clemency by Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam in 2019. Cyntoia's story sparked a national discussion about the importance of understanding the complexities surrounding criminal involvement of individuals forced into exploitation. Following this, the Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr announced the formation of the state’s first-ever Human Trafficking (HT) Unit. However, in 2020, Meyetta became a victim again—this time of the legal system—which failed to recognize her as a survivor seeking justice.

In 2021, despite widespread recognition of her victimhood, Meyetta was once again let down by the institutions meant to protect her. The systemic failures continue to set a dangerous precedent, where survivors of trafficking are criminalized rather than assisted. This is not just a miscarriage of justice, but an affront to human rights.

We urge the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles to carefully reconsider Meyetta King’s case and grant her clemency. Her continued incarceration is a stark reminder of the pervasive injustices within our legal system, particularly towards women of color and victims of trafficking.

Please join us in asking for mercy and compassion. Meyetta deserves the opportunity to reclaim her life, free from the stigma and arbitrary punishment that has been unjustly imposed upon her. Sign this petition today to call for clemency and real justice for Meyetta King.
