Im Februar erreichte das Institut für Romanistik kurz nach erfolgreicher Begehung durch eine Akkreditierungskommission die Nachricht, das Haushaltsdefizit der Humboldt-Universität erfordere es, seine beiden Italienischprofessuren zu streichen und die Italienischstudiengänge einzustellen. 
Dieser Schritt hätte fatale Folgen! Weit über das Institut hinaus wären hiervon das starke geisteswissenschaftliche Profil unserer Universität sowie die Vielfalt von Forschung und Lehre in der derzeit einzigartige attraktiven, Wissbegierige aus aller Welt anziehenden Berliner Universitätslandschaft betroffen. Die Abschaffung der Humboldt-Italianistik würde auch das kulturelle Leben in Berlin, seine Museen und seine Opern- und Konzerthäuser in Mitleidenschaft ziehen. 
Das Institut für Romanistik organisiert deshalb einen Aktionstag: Unter dem Motto La Humboldt siamo (anche) noi! Tag für den Erhalt der Italianistik an der Humboldt-Universität kommen am 26.6.24 im Lichthof des Hautgebäudes, Unter den Linden 6, Studierende und Lehrende des Instituts mit externen Unterstützer:innen zusammen, um zu zeigen, was Italianistik kann und warum sie an der Humboldt-Universität erhalten werden muss.

Lo scorso febbraio, poco dopo aver ricevuto un giudizio oltremodo positivo da parte della commissione di accreditamento, i membri del Consiglio d’Istituto del Dipartimento di Romanistica della Humboldt-Universität di Berlino hanno appreso con non poco stupore che il deficit di bilancio dell’Ateneo renderà a quanto pare necessaria la soppressione delle due cattedre di Italiano (rispettivamente di Linguistica e Letteratura) attualmente vacanti. Ciò comporterà inevitabilmente la chiusura dei corsi di laurea in Italiano, tanto per la triennale quanto per la specialistica (Master of Education). Il corpo docente e tutto il personale dell’Istituto di Romanistica è unanimemente convinto che tale decisione rappresenti un passo falso destinato ad avere conseguenze fatali non solo per l’Istituto, ma anche per tutta la Humboldt-Universität, che ne uscirebbe ridimensionata nella ricchezza e varietà della ricerca e dell’insegnamento, il che assesterebbe un duro colpo al panorama universitario berlinese, attualmente unico nel suo genere nell’attirare studenti da tutto il mondo. Inoltre, è nostra convinzione che la soppressione degli studi di Italianistica presso il nostro Ateneo avrà ripercussioni anche nella ricezione della vita culturale della città di Berlino, per i cui musei, teatri, cinema e sale da concerto l’Italia rappresenta da sempre uno dei principali Paesi di riferimento. 
Vi chiediamo, pertanto, di sostenere i nostri sforzi per la salvaguardia dell’Italianistica humboldtiana firmando il presente appello e partecipando (in presenza o da remoto) al Dies Italicus 'La Humboldt siamo (anche noi)! Giornata di mobilitazione e di dibattito per la salvaguardia dei corsi di studi di Italianistica' prevista per il 26 giugno p.v., h 10:00-17:30 (Lichthof, Unter den Linden 6). In February of this year, shortly after a successful inspection by an external accreditation commission, we, the Department of Romance Literatures and Linguistics at Humboldt University, received the news that the university’s budget deficit made it necessary to discontinue our two Italian professorships (in Linguistics and Literature, respectively) and to close our Italian Studies programs, both for the three-year bachelor and a two-year master’s degree program (Master of Education). We believe this is a step in the wrong direction that would not only greatly weaken our department as a whole, but would affect the entire university. Discontinuing the Italian Studies programs would negatively impact the diversity of research and teaching in Berlin’s unique university landscape, which attracts students and researchers from all over the world.

Unterstützen Sie den Erhalt der Italianistik an der Humboldt-Universität!

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, liebe Unterstützer:innen,

im Februar dieses Jahres erreichte uns, das Institut für Romanistik der Humboldt-Universität, kurz nach der erfolgreichen Begehung durch eine Akkreditierungskommission die Nachricht, dass das Haushaltsdefizit der HU es notwendig mache, unsere beiden Italienischprofessuren zu streichen und unsere Italienischstudiengänge im Bachelor und im Master of Education einzustellen. Wir halten das für einen falschen Schritt mit fatalen Folgen, nicht nur für unser Institut, sondern darüber hinaus auch für unsere Universität und für die Vielfalt von Forschung und Lehre in der derzeit einzigartig attraktiven, Wissbegierige aus aller Welt anziehenden Berliner Universitätslandschaft. Auch das kulturelle Leben in Berlin, seine Museen und seine Opern- und Konzerthäuser sehen wir von der Abschaffung der Humboldt-Italianistik in Mitleidenschaft gezogen. Daher bitten wir Sie, uns bei unseren Bemühungen um deren Erhalt zu unterstützen!

Die Streichung unserer Professuren und die Einstellung unserer Italienischstudiengänge würde bedeuten, dass unser Institut fast ein Drittel seiner Mitarbeiter:innen und mit dem Italienischen eine der drei Säulen verlöre, von denen seine romanistisch-vergleichende Forschung und Lehre getragen wird. Das Institut für Romanistik der Humboldt-Universität, an dem die Italianistik von Anfang an eine herausragende Rolle gespielt hat, war und ist nicht nur eines der ersten, sondern auch eines der renommiertesten romanistischen Institute in Deutschland. Mit der Streichung der Italianistik stünden die in den letzten Jahren vollzogene Neuausrichtung des Instituts, seine internationale Vernetzung und sein kulturwissenschaftliches Profil ebenso in Frage wie seine Existenz.

Nicht nur für unser Institut, sondern auch für das weltweit renommierte geisteswissenschaftliche Profil der Humboldt-Universität hätte die Abschaffung der Italianistik weitreichende Folgen. Denn in zahlreichen geisteswissenschaftlichen Fächern existiert derzeit eine lebendige, international ausgerichtete Forschung mit Italienbezug, sei es im Bereich der Literatur, der Linguistik, der Kunst und Musik oder der Geschichte und Archäologie. Was die Studierendenzahlen angeht, so verlöre nicht nur unser Institut künftig all diejenigen, die das Italienische mit einer weiteren romanischen Sprache kombinieren. Auch über das Institut hinaus gibt es derzeit an der Humboldt-Universität die Möglichkeit, zahlreiche Fächer gemeinsam mit dem Italienischen zu studieren, besonders nachfragt sind Kunstgeschichte, Geschichte oder Musikwissenschaft; als zweites Lehramtsfach kann das derzeit an Berliner Schulen immer beliebtere Italienische auch mit naturwissenschaftlichen Fächern kombiniert werden. All das wäre fortan nicht mehr möglich.

Für die Vielfalt der Berliner Universitätslandschaft, die es den einzelnen Fächern derzeit noch erlaubt, in Forschung und Lehre eigene Profile zu entwickeln und so mit den Nachbarn Unter den Linden oder in Dahlem in einem ebenso anregenden wie produktiven Wettbewerb zu stehen, wäre die Streichung der Humboldt-Italianistik ein starker Rückschlag. Wir sehen die Vielfalt und Diversität des geistes- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Angebots an den Berliner Universitäten durch die derzeitigen Überlegungen des Berliner Senats bezüglich der Abschaffung ‚doppelter‘ Standorte generell gefährdet. Gerade die Existenz von zwei Instituten für Romanistik in unmittelbarer Nachbarschaft zueinander hat die starke, komplementäre Profilbildung der Institute befördert. Die Akkreditierungskommission strich die innovative Profilierung der Romanistik der Humboldt-Universität in den aktuellen Themenbereichen Gender, Medien und Wissen besonders heraus, an der der Fachbereich der Italianistik einen bedeutenden Anteil hat.

Nicht zuletzt würde eine Einstellung der Italienisch-Studiengänge gerade zu diesem Zeitpunkt problematische politische Signale senden: Nicht nur haben der deutsche Bundeskanzler und die italienische Ministerpräsidentin unlängst eine verstärkte kulturelle Kooperation zwischen Deutschland und Italien beschlossen, auch ist im Jahr 2024 Italien Thema- und Gastland der Frankfurter Buchmesse.

Appello per la salvaguardia dei corsi di studi di Italianistica della Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

Gentili Signore e Signori,

lo scorso febbraio, poco dopo aver ricevuto un giudizio oltremodo positivo da parte della commissione di accreditamento, i membri del Consiglio d’Istituto del Dipartimento di Romanistica della Humboldt-Universität di Berlino hanno appreso con non poco stupore che il deficit di bilancio dell’Ateneo renderà a quanto pare necessaria la soppressione delle due cattedre di Italiano (rispettivamente di Linguistica e Letteratura) attualmente vacanti. Ciò comporterà inevitabilmente la chiusura dei corsi di laurea in Italiano, tanto per la triennale quanto per la specialistica (Master of Education). Il corpo docente e tutto il personale dell’Istituto di Romanistica è unanimemente convinto che tale decisione rappresenti un passo falso destinato ad avere conseguenze fatali non solo per l’Istituto, ma anche per tutta la Humboldt-Universität, che ne uscirebbe ridimensionata nella ricchezza e varietà della ricerca e dell’insegnamento, il che assesterebbe un duro colpo al panorama universitario berlinese, attualmente unico nel suo genere nell’attirare studenti da tutto il mondo. Inoltre, è nostra convinzione che la soppressione degli studi di Italianistica presso il nostro Ateneo avrà ripercussioni anche nella ricezione della vita culturale della città di Berlino, per i cui musei, teatri, cinema e sale da concerto l’Italia rappresenta da sempre uno dei principali Paesi di riferimento.
Vi chiediamo, pertanto, di sostenere i nostri sforzi per la salvaguardia dell’Italianistica humboldtiana, tenendo presente specialmente quanto segue:

La prevista soppressione delle cattedre e dei Corsi di laurea comporterebbe il taglio di quasi un terzo dei posti di lavoro attualmente in forza all’Istituto e l’abbattimento di una delle tre colonne portanti – nei campi della ricerca e dell’insegnamento − degli Studi di Romanistica in prospettiva comparatistica. L’Istituto di Romanistica della Humboldt-Universität, al cui interno l’Italianistica ha svolto un ruolo di rilievo fin dai suoi esordi, è stato ed è non solo uno dei più antichi, ma anche uno dei più rinomati del suo genere in area germanofona.
La soppressione dell’Italianistica humboldtiana metterebbe, inoltre, in discussione la riorganizzazione dell’intero Istituto sotto il profilo scientifico, avvenuta negli ultimi anni, così come la fitta rete di relazioni scientifiche internazionali già esistenti, il profilo culturale, e, in ultima analisi, l’esistenza stessa del Dipartimento.

A ciò va aggiunto che una soppressione dell’Italianistica avrebbe conseguenze gravi e di vasta portata anche per il rinomato profilo umanistico della Humboldt-Universität nel suo insieme, dal momento che in numerose discipline umanistiche sussiste a livello internazionale un’intensa e vivace collaborazione con il mondo italofono, a cominciare dai campi della letteratura, della linguistica, dell’arte e della musica, della storia e dell’archeologia.
Considerando il numero di studenti direttamente o indirettamente interessati dalla chiusura dell’Italianistica, è facile prevedere che le ricadute non riguarderanno solo il Dipartimento di Romanistica e tutti coloro che desiderano studiare Italiano in combinazione con un’altra lingua romanza. Anche in diverse altre Facoltà vi sono discipline e corsi di studio che privilegiano una combinazione con l’Italiano, in particolare la Storia dell’Arte, la Storia e la Musicologia. L’Italiano – materia divenuta negli ultimi anni sempre più presente nelle scuole berlinesi – rappresenta, inoltre, come materia di insegnamento, una possibile combinazione con discipline di ambito scientifico, ma tali percorsi di studio sono ora messi a rischio dall’eventuale venir meno dell’Italianistica.

Per tutti questi motivi, sullo sfondo della varietà del panorama universitario berlinese, che ancora garantisce alle singole discipline di sviluppare propri profili di ricerca e di insegnamento in un clima di stimolante e proficua competizione tra le istituzioni accademiche della città, la soppressione dell’Italianistica humboldtiana rappresenterebbe un grave passo indietro!
Riteniamo la ricchezza e la varietà dell’offerta formativa nelle scienze umanistiche e culturali delle Università berlinesi fortemente minacciate dalle attuali intenzioni del Senato di Berlino relative alla soppressione di “doppie” sedi per uno stesso corso di studi. A nostro parere, è stata proprio l’esistenza di due Istituti di Romanistica in stretta vicinanza a favorire negli anni la forte e complementare definizione dei profili degli stessi. 
La commissione di accreditamento, che ha recentemente valutato i nostri corsi di laurea, ha tenuto a sottolineare l’innovativo profilo della Romanistica humboldtiana, in particolare nei sempre più attuali studi di genere (Gender studies), media e comunicazione nonché Cultural Studies, in cui la sezione di Italianistica svolge da sempre un ruolo di primo piano.

In ultimo va sottolineato che il segnale politico derivante da una eventuale chiusura dei corsi di laurea in Italiano andrebbe nella direzione opposta alle storiche e sempre fruttuose relazioni italo-tedesche, recentemente rafforzate con la stipula di accordi bilaterali firmati dal Cancelliere tedesco e dalla Presidente del Consiglio italiana; tutto ciò – per ironia della sorte – proprio nell’anno in cui l’Italia si appresta ad essere Paese ospite del Salone del Libro di Francoforte.

Vi chiediamo, pertanto, di sostenere i nostri sforzi per la salvaguardia dell’Italianistica humboldtiana. In che modo? Support Italian Studies at Humboldt University!

Dear colleagues and friends,

in February of this year, shortly after a successful inspection by an external accreditation commission, we, the Department of Romance Literatures and Linguistics at Humboldt University, received the news that the university’s budget deficit made it necessary to discontinue our two Italian professorships (in Linguistics and Literature, respectively) and to close our Italian Studies programs, both for the three-year bachelor and a two-year master’s degree program (Master of Education). We believe this is a step in the wrong direction that would not only greatly weaken our department as a whole, but would affect the entire university. Discontinuing the Italian Studies programs would negatively impact the diversity of research and teaching in Berlin’s unique university landscape, which attracts students and researchers from all over the world. 

Cutting our professorships and discontinuing our Italian Studies programs would mean that our department would lose nearly a third of its staff and one of the three pillars – Italian – on which our comparative approach to research and teaching Romance languages and literature is based. Italian Studies has played a pivotal role in our department from the beginning, helping to make it not only one the first but also one of the most renowned Romance studies departments in Germany. Eliminating Italian Studies would call into question the department’s recent reorientation, its international network, its cultural studies profile, and ultimately its very existence.

The abolition of Italian Studies would also have far-reaching consequences for the globally renowned humanities profile of Humboldt University. In numerous disciplines across the Humanities, like comparative literature, linguistics, art and music, history, archaeology and philosophy, research related to Italy is at the center of vibrant and internationally visible work. In terms of student numbers, our department would not only lose those who study Italian as their major subject, but also all those who currently combine Italian with another Romance language. At Humboldt University students have the possibility of studying numerous subjects in combination with Italian, with art history, history, and musicology being particularly in demand. Italian is also becoming increasingly popular in Berlin schools, making our Master of Education program central to the training of a new generation of Italian teachers; in this program Italian can even be combined with scientific subjects. All this would be lost.

For the diversity of Berlin’s unique university landscape, which currently allows departments to enhance their own profiles in research and teaching by engaging in stimulating and productive competition with their colleagues at neighboring Universities, the planned cuts would be a significant setback. We see the diversity and variety of humanities and cultural studies at Berlin’s universities threatened by the Berlin Senate’s policy position of removing ‘duplicate’ locations. The existence of two departments of Romance studies in close proximity to each other at Humboldt University and Freie University respectively has fostered the development of strong, complementary research and teaching profiles. Regarding our Department, the accreditation commission was particularly impressed by the strong focus on gender studies, media studies and language & knowledge, highly current areas of study to which the Italian Studies section has made an indispensable contribution.

Last, but not least, the discontinuation of the Italian Studies programs at this particular time would send problematic political signals: not only have the German Chancellor and the Italian Prime Minister recently agreed to strengthen cultural cooperation between Germany and Italy, but Italy is also the theme and guest country of the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2024.
