The Issue

We are currently living in a global climate and ecological emergency. This crisis requires action from all aspects of society, and we are calling upon the University as an institution of knowledge to fulfil its duty of protecting student's futures and do everything within its power to take climate action.

Following YUSU's declaration we are calling on the University to do the same, and make the following concrete commitments to climate action:

  • commit to carbon neutrality - a concrete commitment to 2030 (in line with the City of York) and an aspirational target of 2025
  • fully divest from fossil fuels and reinvest this money in community renewable energy projects
  • ensure all energy comes from renewable energy suppliers
  • build all new buildings to passivhaus standards of carbon neutrality and retrofit all existing buildings to meet these standards
  • green the curriculum - ensure learning about the climate crisis is part of every course
  • increase sustainability of food on campus
  • ban unnecessary single use plastics
  • run a public information campaign about climate breakdown to ensure students are informed on this issue

This call to action is supported by societies, students and staff across campus, and this petition is only the beginning of this campaign - please follow the Environment and Ethics page and join the group to stay up to date with how you can get involved with campaigning.
