Dear UWAP Supporter
You are receiving this message because you signed the #SaveUWAP petition in late 2019, calling on the University of Western Australia not to disband University of Western Australia Publishing.
There are two pieces of good news to share: UWAP has survived, and Terri-ann White has a new publishing venture of her own, Upswell. Read on for more about both of these.
UWAP: New Board, Open For Submissions Next Month
The University of Western Australia announced last week that UWAP will continue operations with a brand new publishing board, chaired by UWA’s Chair in Australian Literature Tony Hughes-d'Aeth (details here: https://uwap.uwa.edu.au/blogs/marginalia/uwa-publishing-board-announcement The board comprises a number of experts and eminent folks from both the publishing and academic worlds. Encouragingly UWAP will retain its commitment to supporting local authors and their uniquely Western Australian stories, history and Indigenous voices.
UWAP will re-open for submissions on May 1.
Terri-ann White and Upswell
The other piece of good news is that Terri-ann White, the powerhouse who guided UWAP to a position of national literary prominence, and one of the reasons why over ten thousand people signed the #SaveUWAP petition, has started a publishing concern of her own, 'Upswell Publishing'. Terri-ann has a message she would like to share with you all:
"Your tremendous support of UWA Publishing at the time of the announced closure over a year ago was hugely appreciated. Over 10,000 readers signed the #SaveUWAP petition!
After her contract was not renewed in June 2020, Terri-ann White left UWAP. Following a year of reflection, recovery and renewal, Terri-ann has re-emerged to establish UPSWELL PUBLISHING in early 2021 as a not for profit publisher of distinctive literary works in fiction, poetry and narrative non-fiction. Each year, UPSWELL will publish 4-10 books that will not fit the mass-market approach of mainstream publishing houses, books that last and will still be noticed after decades, to ultimately find a berth in Australia’s cultural inheritance.
UPSWELL’s first three books will be published from mid-2021. More than just a publishing house, UPSWELL will offer a curated subscription program presenting a set of unique books each year, along with reading notes and a newsletter featuring information about forthcoming books. As well, the newsletter will feature commissioned essays on topics across the arts generally as well as writing about social and political matters.
If you would like to hear more, or just keep in touch, please subscribe here at our landing website page www.upswellpublishing.com There’ll be a completed website very soon. Feel free to make direct contact at books@upswellpublishing.com
As an incentive, every 100th newsletter subscriber will win one of UPSWELL’s three books to be released in 2021.
Or take the next step and support with a tax deductible donation the building of a strong base for literary publishing: traditionally high in value and low on financial returns. Terri-ann is using her own funds to commence this start-up business and is hoping to cover most costs through sales, but inevitably with the publishing of literary works there will be a gap. I hope those two pieces of good news were of interest to you. Many thanks for your support for the original petition. This will be the last update. Have a great week, and a pleasant long weekend if that happens in your State or Territory.
