USW playcentre closure: Stop cuts affecting our community

The University is facing challenging financial times and as part of far-reaching cuts is withdrawing the subsidy given to the Nursery at the Treforest campus. They will now embark upon a consultation period during which the decision will be made whether to close the provision entirely.
The closure of the USW Playcentre would have wide-ranging negative effects on our local community. It is a vital resource for local parents, including students and staff at the University as well as those who live and work in the surrounding areas. It provides excellent childcare with experienced, qualified staff who are commited to ongoing training in order to privide the best possible service. The playcentre caters for children from age three months to five years as well as a holiday play scheme for children up to twelve years old and has fully trained staff able to care for children with special educational needs.
The University's core values include "outstanding support" for students, "accessible higher learning opportunities," and being a "catalyst for economic growth and social justice." In conflict with these objectives, the closure of the Playcentre will disproportionately affect young parents who are starting or continuing study or training, mature students returning to education and those working in the local economy (including staff at the University itself).
My family have used the Playcentre for the last five years, with my oldest child benefiting right through from baby to preschool and now using the playscheme in the holidays, and my youngest about to finish the preschool programme but still access the service during holidays. It has enabled both me and my partner to continue studying and working whilst raising our children and has done so to such a high standard that both have had a brilliant start to their education and emotional development. The staff have always gone above and beyond to provide the best possible care for my children. This is exactly the service in which the University should invest to support its students and staff, and to support the local community and economy.
Please help to save this vital service. If we work together we can help the University to see the value of the Playcentre and help to provide solutions which will allow it to continue. If you are a student or staff member please include your student or staff ID number when you sign the petition.
