Help UofSC's Sorority Council Reconsider Enforcing New, Unfair Sanctions
The Issue
In an act trying to help make Greek women safer, the University of South Carolina's Sorority Council has banned any sorority women from going onto private property to tailgate this coming weekend for the football game. Sorority Council's goal is to help empower sorority women through leadership, service, friendship, and scholarship. These actions are doing the exact opposite- oppressing sorority women. The University has expressed concern with the amount of Greek-affiliated members sent to the hospital in the last 3 weeks. 44 USC students in total were sent to the hospital, 18 of those being apart of the Greek community. The alcohol-related issues surrounding Greek life at USC do need to be addressed, but this is the wrong way to go about it. I am a proud and active member of a sorority at USC and I 100% agree that there needs to be actions taken to reduce the amount of alcohol related hospital visits and incidents within the Greek community; however the measures being taken are completely irrational. The actions being taken by USC to try and fix these problems are completely sexist. We are told we can't go to the Fraternity Lots to tailgate before the game this Saturday in hopes that when girls don't show up, fraternities will agree to abide by the new rules USC wants to put in place. In this situation, we sorority women are being looked at as a prize, not human beings, and I don't agree with that at all. We were not informed of this decision until after it was set in stone. We did not get to vote on it and we did not get to form an opinion about this until after the fact and that isn't fair. To be told the fraternity guys are allowed to tailgate and other girls outside of Greek life can still go, but not allow us girls in Greek life to be a part of that is so wrong. We all pay thousands of dollars to be a part of this Greek community here at USC and to be told that we as sorority women cannot attend something is extremely frustrating. We are all adult women, old enough to make decisions for ourselves and I agree some of us don't make the best decisions all the time, but it's not USC's place to hold our hand. Making mistakes is how we learn right from wrong and it's also not the fraternities fault that people aren't always responsible. Please sign this petition if you agree the decisions made by Sorority Council are sexist, and not to mention, these new sanctions will not stop the "drinking culture" here at USC. We deserve to have our voice heard and vote on these decisions made by Sorority Council.
