Nottingham University Sports Memberships
The Issue
University of Nottingham Sport Membership pricing.
This is a petition for those that believe the tier system (bronze, silver and gold) should be reintroduced now that the new sports facilities have almost been completed.
As it stands with the early bird offer that ends on the 9th of October 2016 all students will have to pay £189 to acquire sports membership (or more after this date). This is a very competitive rate for a well equipped sports facility however ALL members of sports clubs this year will require you to have membership and a lot of them either don't use many of the facilities that are provided or use them very often.
For freshers starting university there are lots of large expenses at the beginning of term. With many of them looking to try new things another large expenditure so early into trying new sports it will quite likely put them off. Even students returning, going into 2nd year or beyond, may now consider if they can afford to continue their chosen sporting society. The increased prices could quite likely have damaging affects on all of the sports clubs that are run by us (students) and it would be a shame to see members and our friends not rejoin their clubs due to this.
Also for those students that only ever use the Jubuliee or Sutton Bonighton campus' gym's, they will all now have to pay substantially more for facilities that are either too far away from them or facilities they won't use.
The tiered system allowed for those that did not use all the facilities that are provided to choose which level suited them so that they could choose a cheaper option if they only used certain facilities. This allowed the facilities to be much more accessible to all students and encouraged many more students in joining the gym and being active. It seems silly that if someone only wished to play squash or badminton occasionally or use the swimming pool they would have to pay full membership.
