Open the Great Reading Room for Public Use

The Great Reading Room is a beautiful room located in the center of Seerley Hall. Seerley was built as the library of the State Teachers College with the Great Reading Room being the heart of the building and student studies. It now spends a majority of its time locked up and receiving little use. This is a shame for not only the students and faculty in the Department of History, but the history of the University itself to keep this room hidden from the public.
Opening up this room would provide an engaging atmosphere for students to study before, between, and after classes. Compared to other buildings across campus, Seerley provides very little space for students to collaborate and study with their peers. As a building currently dedicated to a discipline centered on scholarship and research, there is little excuse for the lack of space to accomplish such attributes.
Signers of this petition are calling on the Provost, Jim Wohlpart, and VP of Student Affairs, Paula Knudson, to open the Great Reading Room for public use. At the very least, students in the UNI Department of History call on these individuals for an active and respectful discussion on the status of this space.
